Pablo Picasso was an artist who participated in multiple areas of the art industry, such as: sculpture, painting, printmaking, poetry, stage design and ceramicist. The artist was born in 1881 known as Pablo Ruiz after taking on his fathers surname, his father was also very interested in art and was actually an art teacher. Years later Pablo then had his surname changed from Ruiz to Picasso which was his mother's maiden name. Picasso was originally born in Spain but over the years he found himself moving around the odd couple of times until he landed himself to living in Paris in 1904, when you come to think of it and think of all of Picasso’s characteristics Paris sounded like the perfect location for him.

What I really enjoy about Picasso is not only his art but also his research and watching the development of his work over the years. Picasso set his work out in periods over time, these periods were known as: Blue period, Rose period, African art and Primitivism, Analytic cubism, Synthetic cubism and Neoclassicism and surrealism. I am intrigued in how each period has been individually set out so you can see how his interests progressed over time.

One of my favourites from Pablo Picasso is a painting known as Girl before a Mirror. Girl before a Mirror was painted using Oil Paints on a sale of 1.62m x 1.3m in 1932. The painting is of a woman ,who is known as his lover Marie-Therese Walter, looking into a mirror. In this painting I believe Marie is pregnant and looking at her reflection which shows her image differently, the reflection shows more of a sagging stomach/bump and lopsided Breasts this could have been done this way to show the woman pointing out imperfections which aren’t really there. You can also see that her reflection has been portrayed in darker tones which also gives off more of a sad feeling. As you can tell from just looking at the painting it was a part of Picasso’s Cubist period, you can tell by the use of Geometric shapes and the way he interlocks the patterns.
I feel that I relate most to Picasso’s Cubism period as I myself like to use cubism in my paintings. He created a huge range of portraits done in the style of cubism which I love, I love how he scales their structure and the way he divides the facial area's into fragments using defined lines. He also uses a lot of bold colours within these portrait pieces which I can relate back to as I also do.
I was not able to insert many photographs of Pablo Picasso's painting due to the images being copyright.
